Lesung mit Live-Musik

“The Peregrine Falcon” by the English author John Alec Baker (1926-1987) is considered a masterpiece of non-fictional literature of the twentieth century. In eloquent poetry, he describes the life of a pair of peregrine falcons in the south of England from the position of a close observer.

It is the story of an obsession, a transformation: Over the course of six months, Baker gets closer to the bird and gradually becomes a hawk-like, observant hunter who learns to interpret nature. Birdwatching here is not a technique of observation, it is a way of life, perhaps an attitude to life – borne by the eager desire to understand by looking.

For the reading with the two actresses Bettina Marugg and Caroline Scholz Ott, the composers Daniel Ott and Stephan Froleyks have developed music that accompanies and intensifies the text. The two percussionists Arturo Portugal and Vera Seedorf play on instruments specially developed for this text and Baker’s world.

“The actresses Bettina Marugg and Caroline Scholz Ott present the rhythmically complex text, sometimes as readers at the table, sometimes wandering through the room (stage and costumes: Annika Ley). Sometimes they speak in sync or change voices and perspectives mid-sentence. Swiss composer Daniel Ott has created an incredibly multi-layered score for the expressive interweaving of lyrical prose and sober performance. The sound artist and co-composer Stephan Froleyks has built the instruments for it – mainly from found objects. They are played live by percussionists Arturo Portugal and Vera Seedorf. Whether precisely tuned driftwood, slate slabs, glasses with and without water, clay pots fixed on thin rods or knives screwed to tables – all of this creates an atmospherically condensed world of sound, the creation of which always remains visible and yet evokes a natural landscape.”
