The thematic protagonist of the evening is the substance without which no life would be possible, the molecule that has written history and stories, the raw material that brought prosperity to Europe, the stimulant with the greatest potential for seduction. We are talking about sugar. It seems that no theater has ever dared to tackle this great subject. Hard to believe, it is obvious that whoever knows the truth about sugar will also understand the world.

Justine Hauer, Bettina Marugg, Manuel Klein and Andreas Meidinger will act on stage simultaneously as performers, musicians and singers, turning the Theater im Ballsaal into a place of crystal-clear and molasses-black expeditions with sound-language diversity and Gregor Schwellenbach’s compositions developed especially for this evening. An evening that is difficult to classify: not an opera, not a musical revue, not a song program – and not a musical. “Sugar” will render any question of classification moot with boundless delight in the multisensory nature of its subject.
