Paris – Hamburg. After 13 years in exile in France, Heinrich Heine undertook this journey in 1843 via stations such as Aachen, Cologne, Hagen, Paderborn, Hanover to the Hanseatic city to his mother – and finally landed there in the bed of Hamburg’s patron saint Hammonia. The latter tries to persuade him to stay in Germany. But the “German scent of the future” that hits him when he looks into the “magic cauldron” is unbearable to him.

Back in Paris, he writes his German winter fairy tale. Playing with fairy tale motifs, yet not at all fairy tale-like, full of sharp polemics and witty irony. An intellectual as well as poetic firework, ignited by nationalistic, reactionary and romanticizing tendencies that Heine encountered on home soil. Restraint? Squeamishness? Wrong. Which is why it initially falls victim to censorship.

Now, in the winter of 2020, which forces everyone to keep a low profile, the Bonn fringe ensemble presents an online performance of Heine’s plump and offensive verse work. Nine actors and actresses turn their homes or secret places into stages and sceneries. They let themselves be inspired, give the verses their very own voices, mutate into Barbarossa, hold discord with the crucified, play, race and think in Heine’s brilliant words, while an alter ego of the poet and a less than fairy-tale DJane meet for this evening in the headquarters at the tracks of a small German train station.

You can join us live on your PC, tablet or smartphone, although we recommend watching on the larger PC screen. After purchasing tickets via eventbrite.de you will receive a zoom link for our online winter fairy tale.
