Ostensibly, the men aboard the Pequod are united by one goal, and yet the crew is as contradictory and colorful as the world community. An early novel from the spirit of globalization? Melville’s monumental work points beyond the concrete situation and confrontation at every moment: cultural and religious confrontations, the most diverse attitudes to life, being on the planks that mean the world, make the year-long whale voyage a picture of life.
Frank Heuel casts the fishing line with his ensemble and fishes out of the encyclopedically constructed novel what the world means to us and asks, true to Calderon: Who is the master? Who the world? And who steers our ship through the seas – towards the white whale?
